Some Down syndrome physical features are oval-shaped eyes, a flattened nasal bridge, and small ears and mouth. Someone with Down Syndrome is likely to be short and may gain weight easily. At least 45 percent suffer from heart defects, and between 60 to 80 percent have vision and hearing problems.

The Cause

A genetic cause is the reason someone is born with Down syndrome. Normally, a person has 46 chromosomes, or groups of DNA. Down syndrome occurs when there is extra material in the 21st chromosome. At least 92 percent of people with this abnormality have an extra whole chromosome 21.
